Heat Pump Models And Specifications
A heat pump is a system designed to move heat from one location to another. They are ideal for home air systems because of their ability to both remove heat from the home during the summer and add heat to the home during the winter. There are a number of popular models of Heat Pump on the market today, ranging in size and capacity from a single-room heat pump to industrial size. SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is the measurement of how much energy it takes to cool a home, while HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, is the measurement of how much energy it takes to heat a home. Another important note is that prices vary wildly based on region and dealer, so make sure you shop around to find the best deal. The ACEEE, the government organization that monitors energy efficiency, recommends only using a heat pump unit with SEER of over 14.5. In addition, the volume of the Heat Pump Fan is important. Below, we will run comparisons of a few of the most popular brands, as well as discussing some of the benefits and drawbacks of each.
Trane - XL, XR, and XB
As with most other brands, Trane has a few levels of heating- the XL, which is their most powerful, the XR, which is their high efficiency, and the XB, which is normal efficiency. The XL line runs at anywhere from 15-19 SEER, depending on the model, as well as running around 9 HSPF and is usually intended for larger capacity homes. Its Heat Pump Fan runs at around 74dB. The XR line runs from 14-16.50 SEER and 8.5-9 HSPF and is intended for medium size homes. Its fan runs at around 75dB. The XB line runs from 13-15 SEER and 8.5 HSPF and is intended for smaller homes, and its fan generally runs at 78dB.
Carrier Infinity - Performance, Comfort, and Base
Carrier’s heat pumps are much more similar to one another, with the largest difference being in the Infinity series. Infinity ran at 19 SEER and 9.5 HSPF, while the others all ran at around 16 SEER and 9 HSPF. They were noted to contain Puron refrigerant, an environmentally sound alternative to Freon refrigerant. All of their Heat Pump Fans were listed as running at 70dB.
Dave Lennox Signature collection - Elite, and Merit series
At the higher end, the Signature collection runs from 16-19 SEER and at 62-67dB their Heat Pump Fans are some of the quietest on the market. The Elite series runs from 15.5-17 SEER and from 71-76dB. The Merit series runs at 13 or 14 SEER and their fans are listed at 76dB.
