Saving Money With An Electric Heat Pump Water Heater
For many homeowners, the current economic situation has resulted in problems with paying for everyday necessities such as utilities, and some have concluded that heat pump water heating units can help offset the high cost of hot water. Manufacturers claim that an electric heat pump style water heater is at least twice as efficient as a regular water heater, if not more. There are several choices in electric heat pump water heaters, including the option of retro-fitting an existing water heater with a heat pump. Heat pump water heaters are also known as hybrid water heaters. and are eligible for the thirty percent federal tax credit that is currently being offered. Heat pump, or hybrid water heaters are the only water heaters that earn energy Star certification. These water heaters are initially more expensive, but their manufacturers claim that they more than make up for this extra cost by the resulting savings over a period of years.
The GE GeoSpring H50DNSRSA, ranging in price from $1,280 at Home Depot to $1,599 at Lowe's, is an Electric Heat Pump Water Heater that is Energy Star qualified and claims to use 62% less energy. The replacable anode rod on this model is considered a plus, along with the fact that the GE GeoSpring can be installed using the existing water and electrical connections, unlike some other heat pump water heaters which require installation by a service professional.
Another Electric Heat Pump Water Heater which comes highly recommended is the Rheem Ecosense hybrid electric 593029, available at Home Depot for $1,498. The Rheem Ecosense has an LED touchpad, and claims to use 55% less electricity and deliver a tank full of hot water 17% faster than a regular water heater. Rheem has been producing water heaters since the 1930's, and has a reputation for quality products.

The Ge GeoSpring and the Rheem Ecosense have both had excellent reviews from owners. The Rheem earned an editor's choice award in 2009 from Contractor Magazine. For homeowners considering upgrading to an Electric Heat Pump Water Heater, either of these models would be an excellent choice and would save the homeowner a lot of money in the future. |
