Energy Cost Saver

In areas that have moderate heating and cooling needs, a cost efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioning units is a heat pump. Heat pumping units use electricity to move heat from a cool area to a warm area. This causes the cool area to become cooler and the warm area to become warmer. This means heat will be moved into the home in the cool season and moved out of the home in the warm season. There are a few different types of heat pumps that a home owner can choose between.

The air source heat pump is the most commonly used system. This system transfers the heat between the air in the house and the air outside. For people using electric heat, the air source heat pump can cut the cost of the power bill by 30% t o40%. air source units also dehumidify the air better than most standard air conditioning units. A ductless version of this system is available for homes without duct work. These are called mini split Heat Pumps. Another air source system is the reverse cycle chiller. It works with water instead of air and can work with radiant floor heating systems. Most air source systems do, however, lose efficiency in extreme climates.

For more extreme climates a geothermal heat pump offers a higher efficiency rate. These are also called ground source or water source Heat Pumps and they work by transferring heat between the house and the ground or a nearby water source. By using the relatively constant water or ground temperatures to control the house temperature, these systems are able to have low operating costs. However, geothermal units cost more to install than air source systems. Cost will depend on lot size, the area's landscaping and the subsoil. Despite the high install cost, customer satisfaction is very high with these systems.

Heat Pumps are a nice alternative to more expensive heating and cooling units. The purchase and installation of any heat pump is costly,, but by finding the right heat pump needed for a house, the system will be able to pay for its self by saving on electricity costs.
